Hair Cycle

Laser hair removal targets hair follicles during the active growth phase, known as the anagen phase. Hair on the body grows in cycles.  Not all hair is in the same phase at the same time. This is why multiple treatment sessions are needed to achieve optimal results.

Here’s an overview of the hair growth cycle in relation to laser hair removal:

Anagen Phase (Active Growth)

  • This is the phase where hair is actively growing and is attached to the follicle.

  • Laser hair removal is most effective during this phase because the hair is rich in melanin (pigment), which absorbs the laser’s energy.

Catagen Phase (Transitional)

  • This is a short phase where hair stops growing and detaches from the follicle.

  • Hair in this phase is not as responsive to laser treatment because it is no longer actively growing.

Telogen Phase (Resting)

  • In this phase, the hair is not growing and is resting before eventually shedding.

  • Laser hair removal is less effective in this phase because the hair is not actively growing.

Why Multiple Sessions Are Needed

Since hair grows in cycles, not all hair is in the anagen phase at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary to ensure that as many hair follicles as possible are treated while they are in the active growth phase.

Typically, laser hair removal treatments are spaced 4-8 weeks apart, allowing enough time for hair follicles to cycle through the various phases, with most people needing 6-8 sessions for optimal results.

Maintenance

Although laser hair removal can result in long-term hair reduction, maintenance sessions are often needed to ensure that any remaining or newly active hair follicles are treated. These sessions typically occur less frequently than the initial treatments (every 6-12 months, for example) but are important for maintaining smooth, hair-free skin over the long term.

What Factors Lead To Maintenance?

Factors lead to maintenance:
Hair Cycles and Dormant Follicles
  • As discussed, hair grows in cycles (anagen, catagen, telogen), and laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is in the anagen (growth) phase. Not all hair is in this phase at the same time, so multiple treatments are required to target hairs in different stages of growth.

  • Dormant hair follicles (those in the catagen or telogen phase) may not be targeted during initial treatments. Over time, some dormant follicles may become active again, leading to new hair growth. Maintenance treatments can address these newly active follicles.

How do hormones affect laser hair removal?

Hormones play a significant role in hair growth. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy, menopause, or certain medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can stimulate the growth of new hair or cause previously treated follicles to become active again. Understanding this can help set realistic expectations for the need for maintenance treatments.

How do age and genetics affect laser hair removal?

As people age, the body's hair growth patterns can change, and new hair growth can sometimes appear in areas previously treated. Genetic factors can also affect how well hair follicles respond to laser treatments. It's important to have realistic expectations and understand that maintenance treatments may be necessary.

Environmental and Lifestyle Factors

In some cases, environmental factors or lifestyle habits may trigger new hair growth. Stress, diet, or even changes in medication can influence hair growth patterns.

Medical Conditions and Medications

Certain medical conditions (like PCOS or thyroid imbalances) and medications that influence hormone levels can trigger new hair growth or make hair return more quickly. If you begin new medications or experience hormonal shifts, maintenance treatments can help manage any regrowth and keep your skin smooth and hair-free.

Hair Removal Process

Laser hair removal works by using concentrated light beams (lasers) to target and destroy hair follicles, preventing future hair growth. Here's how it works step-by-step:

Step 1
Laser Selection

Our Technician choses the laser wavelength that is the best choice for your skin type.

Step 2
Follicle Damage

The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle at its root. This process, called "selective photothermolysis," targets only the hair without harming the surrounding skin.

Step 3
Shedding

After the treatment, the hair will naturally shed over a period of days or weeks as the damaged follicles stop producing hair.

Noteworthy Points Lotus Laser Aesthetics

Painless laser hair removal is available in Sartell with the Motus Deka.  Yes!!! It really is pain-free.  No, being pain-free does not mean it is less effective.

A traditional laser hair removal machine is used in Isle. There, we use the Quanta EVO Light. All measures are taken to ensure the most comfortable experience possible.

Unfortunately, all lasers are unable to treat red, white, and gray hairs because they lack the necessary pigment for targeting.

Pre-Care & Post-Care for Laser Hair Removal

How to prepare for your appointment:

1. Do nothing that will elevate your core body temperature within 24 hours before your appointment, such as saunas, working out, etc. and plan for the same 24 hours post-procedure.

2. You must shave the hair of the body part to be treated. If you cannot shave yourself, then advise the technician and our staff prior to treatment in order schedule extra time in the appointment. Do not wax, pluck or use depilatories during your series of laser hair reduction

3. Avoid sun exposure for 1 to 2 weeks prior to treatment and use SPF 30 daily to ensure coverage against UVB and UVA rays.

4. Do not use self-tanning products for 1 to 2 weeks prior to and/or post treatment.

5. Discontinue use of Tretinoin type products (Renova, Tretinoin, Retin A, Retin A Micro, Tri-Luma, Solage, etc.) or Hydroquinone at least 7 days prior to treatment.

6. Many medications that are sun sensitive will also make you more sensitive to the laser. Please disclose any medications that you may be taking. *Also noted in the contraindications checklist.

7. If you have a history of cold sores, begin prophylactic treatment with Valtrex or a similar medication, no later than the day prior to your laser hair treatment.

8. Notify the center if you develop a cold sore, acne, open lesions in the area being treated, or experience any type of illness prior to your treatment.

REMEMBER - Laser hair reduction is never 100%. Industry standard is 75 to 90% reduction in the hairs. Not all hairs will be destroyed. Hormones can cause hair to grow back. Also, hairs need to have dark pigment. White, gray, and red hairs can not be picked up by the laser. It is possible for them to change color in the next hair cycle, so some hairs that were once candidates, can change to not being candidates.

How should I care for my skin after laser hair removal?

1. You may experience small red bumps around the hair follicle. This is normal. Do not pick, rub, or scratch these until they clear.

2. If your skin scabs, crusts, or burns, do not pick, rub, or scratch these areas. Gently cleanse the area and apply hydrocortisone cream several times a day for one week. If the area is open, also apply a layer of antibiotic ointment over the hydrocortisone cream. Contact us immediately if you experience any burns.

3. Do not sunbathe or use a tanning bed for at least 1 week following your treatment. Use at least SPF 30 in the sun after the initial week.

4. Avoid activities that may raise your core body temperature for at least 24 hours after your treatment, such as saunas or working out.

5. It can take several weeks for the hair in the treated area to "fall out" (push up and out of the follicle). Do not pick or pull at the hair as it works itself out.

6. Do not expect your hair to "not grow back" after a single session. Laser hair removal is a process.

7. Subsequent treatment sessions should be 6 to 8 weeks apart for the face and 8 to 12 weeks apart for the body.

8. Although rare, infection in the treated area is possible. Signs of infection may include redness, tenderness, and fever. Contact us if you have any concerns.

FAQs for Laser Hair Removal

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?

Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions for optimal, long-lasting results. Because hair grows in different phases, multiple treatments ensure that all active follicles are effectively targeted for smoother, hair-free skin.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction, though some hair may regrow over time. Most clients experience a significant 80–90% reduction in unwanted hair, with occasional maintenance sessions helping to keep skin smooth and clear.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

At Lotus Laser Aesthetics, our Motus Deka technology in Sartell offers a pain-free experience while maintaining powerful results. In Isle, we use the Quanta EVO Light, designed for precision and comfort. Most clients describe the sensation as mild warmth or a gentle snap on the skin.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is effective on nearly all areas, including the face, underarms, arms, legs, back, bikini area, and chest. Our advanced lasers are suitable for most skin types, though red, white, or gray hair cannot be treated due to lack of pigment.

Why are multiple sessions necessary?

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only targets hair during its active growth phase (anagen). Multiple treatments spaced 4–8 weeks apart ensure that each follicle is treated at the right time for maximum results and long-term smoothness.

How should I prepare for my laser hair removal session?

Before your appointment, shave the treatment area 24–48 hours in advance, and avoid waxing or plucking for several weeks. Refrain from tanning and use broad-spectrum sunscreen. After treatment, keep the skin cool, moisturized, and protected from sun exposure to promote healing and maintain results.
