Lotus Laser Aesthetics offers personalized acne and scar treatments. In Isle, the EVO Light targets bacteria with heat. In Sartell, the Discovery Pico stimulates collagen to reduce indentations and even skin tone for smooth, radiant, lasting results.
Acne develops when a skin pore becomes clogged, causing the natural skin oil that normally drains to the surface to get trapped inside. Living within this trapped oil is acne bacteria called Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes). When the oil is trapped, C. acnes multiplies. However, acne is not a bacterial disease. It is an inflammatory condition, and C. acnes is just one factor involved. Fortunately, with advancing research and new technology, there is real hope for overcoming this confidence barrier.
A laser target is called a chromophore, and bacteria act as chromophores. By targeting the bacteria with a laser beam, the heat generated destroys them effectively. Laser treatment is one of the best ways to reach and eliminate these bacteria, as topical creams and ointments often struggle to penetrate beneath the skin surface. Antibiotics have also been used in the past, but their long term use can lead to serious complications.
Acne scars are areas of permanent skin damage that occur when severe acne (like cysts or nodules) disrupts the skin’s healing process. When acne lesions heal, the body sometimes produces too little or too much collagen, leading to scars.
Laser treatments are a popular and effective option for improving the appearance of acne scars. They work by stimulating the skin’s natural healing process, remodeling collagen, and smoothing the skin’s surface.
Our technician chooses the correct laser wavelength to target the C. acne bacteria.
The laser is pointed at the area affected by acne. Its energy is absorbed by the bacteria, heating it up and killing it.
Redness and swelling from active acne lesions typically decrease soon after treatment.
The same laser wavelength and settings can be used for active acne and skin rejuvenation. However, if the focus is on rebuilding scars only, a more specific wavelength can be chosen.
The laser’s heat creates micro holes in the dermis, stimulating collagen growth and natural skin regeneration for a smoother, firmer appearance. This process helps reduce fine lines and scars.
As the *collagen begins to rebuild the dermis, the skin raises up to its original shape over time.
Typically, 3 to 5 sessions spaced 1 to 4 weeks apart are needed to start. The exact number depends on the severity of the acne. While acne is not curable, laser treatments can help minimize breakouts significantly. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine in the meantime is essential. Maintenance sessions are recommended after the initial series on an as-needed basis.
The fact that C. acnes lives on normal skin and yet not all people develop acne indicates that its mere presence does not necessarily mean it causes acne. HOWEVER, it definitely contributes to acne. So as a proactive measure, be sure to wash your hands frequently before touching your face, keep makeup brushes clean, keep your phone clean, and consider changing out your pillowcases and possibly the full sheet set every couple days.
Treating active acne is not painful, but it can be a bit uncomfortable due to the heating process. Treating acne scarring can also be uncomfortable and is often described as feeling like a rubber band snap. A sunburned sensation is common for a few hours post-procedure and may sometimes last overnight. Numbing cream is available for the procedure. Please talk to the technician prior to your appointment if you are interested in using numbing cream. Pinpoint bleeding is also common. Pinpoint bleeding refers to very light bleeding coming from what appears to be tiny pinpricks.
Avoid sun-exposure or tanning beds.
Discontinue use of topical exfoliating agents (Glycolics/ Alpha or Beta-hydroxy acids)
Discontinue retinoid medications e.g. Retinol, Tretinoin (Retin-A/ Atralin), Adapalene (Differin), Tazarotene (Tazorac), etc. and OTC anti-aging products contain retinol or retinaldehyde.
2. The day of the procedure:
Come with a clean face with no makeup, lotion, etc.
Active Acne Post Treatment Guidelines
Patient response can vary after a Laser Acne treatment. Erythema (redness) is usually noted within a few minutes after the completion of the procedure. A slight sun burn sensation in and around the area treated is also normal and expected. These reactions tend to subside within 1-4 hours after the treatment. The treated area must be treated with care. BE GENTLE! Do not scratch or pick at your skin.
A cold compress or ice pack can be used to provide comfort if the treated area is especially warm. This is rarely needed, but if so, usually within the first 4 hours after treatment.
Until sensitivity has completely subsided, avoid all of the following:
Use of scented lotions or soaps, exfoliant creams (Retin-A, glycolic/salicylic and alpha- hydroxy acids), acne creams or gels, loofa sponges and aggressive scrubbing
Hot or cold water - wash with tepid water
Shaving
Swimming pools and spas with multiple chemicals/chlorine
Activities that cause excessive perspiration
It is best recommended to leave your skin without any make-up for a few days. Some ingredients in the cosmetics may clog your pores, and not allow your skin to breathe or heal properly over time.
Vitamin E or Aloe Vera applied to the treatment area may provide a soothing effect.
Post treatment discomfort is typically minimal but if the area is very uncomfortable, oral pain relievers; i.e. Extra Strength Tylenol or Advil, may be used.
If the skin is broken or a blister appears, apply an antibiotic ointment and contact the office immediately. Keep the affected area moist and avoid direct sunlight.
Strictly avoid any sun exposure to the treated area for a minimum of 7 – 14 days after the procedure. The treated area is more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change. Keep the area covered and use a sun block with a protection factor of 30+ reapplying the sun block every two hours. Delayed blistering secondary to sun exposure has been noted up to 72 hours post treatment.
Subsequent treatments are based upon your clinician’s recommendation and are typically 1- 2 treatments per week for at least 6 weeks or until acne clears. The number and frequency of treatments required will depend on the severity of your acne and how well it responds to treatment.
Clinical studies suggest that at least two laser acne treatments are needed to begin to see results and results have been reported to last up to 6 months.
Acne Scarring Post-Treatment Guidelines
Post-Treatment:
You may experience minor redness or mild swelling for a few hours after treatment
Rarely, you may see small areas of pin-point bleeding and occasional small blisters may form (do not pick or pop).
The treated area may itch for several weeks and may feel dry or flaky.
Post-Care Treatment:
You may apply cold air or an ice pack to sooth the treated area and antibiotic ointment to avoid possible inflammation.
You can use fragrance-free, perfume-free moisturizer cream on the area
KEEP THE AREA TREATED OUT OF THE SUN FOR 7-10DAYS AFTER TREATMENT
The use of sunscreen is recommended post-treatment for approximately 6-12 weeks.
It is best recommended to leave your skin without any make-up for a few days. Some ingredients in the cosmetics may clog your pores, and not allow your skin to breathe or heal properly over time.
Yes! Laser treatments not only target existing acne but also reduce oil gland activity and kill acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin. With regular maintenance, this helps minimize future breakouts and supports long-term skin clarity.
Some clients may experience a brief “purge” as trapped impurities surface after treatment, this is temporary and a normal part of your skin’s renewal process. Your skin will gradually clear and smooth out with continued sessions.
Absolutely. Combining laser therapy with professional facials or mild peels can enhance your results by exfoliating dead skin and improving product absorption. We’ll recommend the best combination based on your skin’s sensitivity and needs.
We typically recommend spacing sessions 2–3 weeks apart. This gives your skin time to heal and generate new collagen before the next laser session, ensuring safe and effective results.
Laser acne treatment is generally well-tolerated. Treating active acne may feel warm, while acne scar treatments can cause mild discomfort, often compared to a rubber band snap. A numbing cream is available for your comfort upon request.
Many clients notice reduced redness and fewer breakouts after the first few sessions. Scarring improvements develop gradually as collagen rebuilds, with smoother and clearer skin becoming visible over time.
