Your skin tone is the result of a complex process during which speciai cells inside the outer layer of your skin called melanocytes produce melanin. Inside these special skin cells are organelles (or mini-organs of the cell) called melanosomes. Variations in the color of your skin depend on the amount, size, and functioning of these tiny melanin factories.

Skin pigment disorders, injuries, and other changes in your body can cause your skin to lighten, darken, or change in color. You might notice changes in your skin tone in multiple areas on the surface of your skin or only in certain patches of skin.

Here at Lotus Laser Aesthetics, we can help with those brown spots (hyperpigmentation) that seem to have come from nowhere with our state-of-the-art pico laser. The laser is attracted to the color of the pigment. With heat and energy it bursts apart the pigment. Post-treatment you will notice some darkening of the spot/spots, which will, within a week or two, slough off, leaving little to no evidence of the spot/spots that were once there. Individuals will vary on how fast and effective the spot ceases to exist. Some folks can remove it in one sessions, however 2-3 sessions is most common.

Hyperpigmentation causes skin to become darker or different in color due to an abnormally high amount of melanin or other pigments in the skin.

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by:

  • Birthmarks
  • Age spots
  • Acne scars
  • Pregnancy (during which melasma, or tan, brown, or gray patches canappear on the face)
  • Addison's disease, or a rare disorder which causes decreased function of the adrenal gland and dark patches of skin
  • Certain drugs such as antibiotics and birth control pills
  • Sun exposure
  • Melasma: Please note melasma is more difficult to treat due to what flares it. Heat is a common irritant that may cause it to flare. The only tried and true laser treatment that can help treat melamsa is the Pico laser. Here at Lotus Laser Aesthetics, the pico workhorse is readily available to meet that need. The pico setting bursts apart the pigment with energy only. BTW, a pico second is ONE-TRILLIONTH of a second!
